“This colorful series makes the complex understandable, taking readers through the step-by-step process of how to plan, design, and build large structures from the ground up. An ingenious timeline ribbon running across the bottom of each page mirrors the gradual progression of construction work to help students understand the extraordinary planning and effort involved as well as the time commitment each of the various projects demands. A roller coaster may take three years to complete, but a dam can take as long as 17 years to finish! The large font, plenty of white space, highlighted vocabulary words, and plentiful color photographs make the books accessible to elementary/middle school students and have high-interest/low-level appeal. The most popular of the five books might be Building a Roller Coaster (which the reader learns are safety-tested 1,000 times using weighted dummies strapped in the seats) or Building a Stadium. Then again, Building a Tunnel has a jaw-dropping machine that cuts right through rock. Only one book, Building a Dam, mentioned the environmental impact of construction. The series would be an excellent choice for students to learn about STEM careers and practical science applications in their own communities. Additional Resources. Glossary. Index. Websites. Recommended.”—Lonna Pierce
