“Presented as early literature lessons, these brief contemporary stories feature familiar problems with younger siblings, a cousin, and a bragging classmate. Competently constructed as parallels to the venerable fables, the stories end with a child stating a lesson learned. The traditional tale is then briefly told, followed by discussion questions for readers and a final note about Aesop. Some of the retellings, particularly the one of Andrew spoiling his mother’s birthday surprise, will work nicely as a read-aloud. Others are a bit thin or awkwardly phrase the moral. The illustrations are mostly populated with a diverse cast of children. However, the alternating between black dots and slanted lines for their eyes is questionable. VERDICT Although the books are cheerful and useful for group discussions, the odd illustrations detract from the overall effectiveness. ”—Series Made Simple

“Told in simple language, Aesop’s fables are revisited with a modern update that young readers will relate to and enjoy. Many of the stories showcase families, normal everyday events, or typical encounters at school. James and the Kindergartener shows a brother and sister who do each other a favor, while Henry’s Track and Field Day takes place on a school track where two boys race. The illustrations depict different nationalities and colorful, unembellished backgrounds that allow readers to focus on the stories. Each short story ends with the lesson to be learned, a short version of the original fable, and discussion questions that correlate with core standards. ”—Lisa Wright
