“The set is unique in that the books use narrative, not rhyming stanzas, to explore rhyme. For instance, [Out for Trout] begins, ‘Today we are going fishing for trout. Dad brings out the fishing rods and gear.’...Rhyming words appear in bold print. Each volume contains a note to parents and teachers that suggests activities to do before, during, and after reading the texts. The final page in every book lists word-family vocabulary. ”—Series Made Simple

Complete Series of 18: retail $487.80 your price $341.10
“These new books in the Word Families series present an updated take on the traditional reader. Each book emphasizes simple words with one ending (such as "-ip,"-ot,"; etc.), using as many "word family" words as possible in the context of a charming story with simple pictures. The educational aspect is clear but not overstated. Each book begins with a page of “Ideas for Parents and Teachers” and ends with a list of word-family words from the book. These words are also highlighted in color throughout the main text of the story. The stories themselves are a bit uneven, possibly because of space or word constraints. Oddly, Don't Trip, Pip! has no resolution to the central problem of the tripping dog. Likewise, Please Take Jake! seems incomplete, with no change to the narrator's role or feelings about being accompanied by his younger brother. The transition from chores to leisure time in Not a Lot, Robot! feels much more satisfying as a simple plot. The friendship story in Stay, Kay! similarly moves seamlessly from one point to the next. In the end, all of these books use stories in a fun way to help new readers learn word skills. Parents, teachers, and children will be grateful. ”—Miriam Aronin
